Smokey and the Bandit
Smokey and the Bandit is a great, star-studded car chase movie
intermixed with romance, action and comedy. It starts off with
two rich cowboys who offer to pay a legendary truck driver for
completing a job. The job is very interesting and detailed. It
consists of driving to Texarkansas, Texas picking up 400 cases
of Coors Beer and driving it back to Atlanta, Georgia, 1800
miles, in 28 hours. One catch is that driving past Texas State
line with Coors is considered bootlegging, but the payoff is
$80,000. The truck driver, the bandit, brilliantly played by
Burt Reynolds, cannot resist such a challenge and accepts the
job. The Bandit, then takes on his old trucking buddy Cledus
Snow to help with the trek. Cledus, Snowman, drives the truck
for hauling the beer, whilst The Bandit drives blocker in a sweet
1977 black Trans-am. The journey becomes more complicated
when the Bandit picks up a runaway bride, later given the
nickname Frog, who is being chased by the groom and his dad, a
Texas sheriff (Sheriff Buford T. Justice). Hilarious hijincks
ensue as the two truckers race to beat the clock.
These photos are from one of the actual Turbo Trans Ams used in
the second Smokey & The Bandit movie. The TA is on display at
The Performance Car Museum in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. If you
look at these pics you will see the word "Bandit on the door. Also
you can see the words "Best Wishes, Burt Reynolds" written in
red ink on the shifter console. This was handwritten by Burt
himself. Lastly you'll notice the special floor mats have been
personalized with the word "Burt".The Pontiac 400 Cu. In. V-8
engine is the power plant of choice in this Poncho. Its mated to a
TH-350 automatic transmission.
